Xiaoshenyou CY-828

Xiaoshenyou CY-828
Type Handheld
Hardware Unknown handheld hardware
Manufacturer Xiaoshenyou
Brand Xiaoshenyou

A 188 in 1 console using the high-resolution variant of the unknown handheld hardware, with TV-out functionality and MP3 playback. Sounds quite good on paper.. not so much in reality.

The box and intro screen describe it as having an XS2 dual-core processor - if true, that would point towards the identity of said hardware, but since "XS" also happens to match up with "XiaoShen", i'm going to take that with a pinch of salt for now..

It can be powered with 3x AAAs or a Nokia BL-5C battery, which can be charged via the MiniUSB port (I guess?). Not that I really trust it to safely charge a battery or anything. (UPDATE: Disregarded my own suspicions, tried charging it with my PS Vita USB charger. Killed the charger. For fuck's sake) (UPDATE #2 I'm now not sure if it even charges from that port at all)

Variations

Another version exists, seemingly also called CY-828, which changes up the button layout a bit, replaces the games with a more generic/common set of 699 from the same developer as BL-606 and similar (about one third are repeats, according to a xiaoshenyou rep) and ditches the MP3 player and TV out functionality.

MP3 player

Unusually for this type of handheld, it has an MP3 player built in, which reads MP3s from a MicroSD slot.

I say "an MP3 player built in" rather than "MP3 playback functionality" because it literally seems to be a cheap MP3 player circuit shoved in the case, completely separate from the game portion of the unit. The unit can only power one at a time; the power switch has "Game" and "MP3" positions.

In MP3 mode it doesn't use any of the game buttons (there are three reserved for MP3 control only), doesn't display anything on the screen and can't play music through the internal speaker (normally - see below). Instead, the same port used for TV out in game mode serves as a headphone jack in MP3 mode, and an obnoxious blue LED flashes to indicate playback. Also the sound quality is piss poor.

The MiniUSB port used for charging also allows access to the SD card, which is one nice touch at least - it also identifies the MP3 circuit as a "JIE LI CD002-1".

and not only that, it acts as a USB audio device and takes over sound output from my computer, routing it via the console's headphone port instead? WHAT WHY

AND it mounts a "USB Input device" on top of that.. what is it even doing

okay but if you plug it into a charger it seems to force it into mp3 playback mode regardless of the switch position - if you switch it to "game" at this point it literally will play mp3s through the internal speaker! (while playing games at the same time, with the game audio in the background!) so.. that's another weird quirk of this weird thing

Games

Some of them are okay, some are bad, they all have short loops of mostly irritating music, and a couple are very racist against the Japanese..

Also some are repeats under new names, or with different graphics/starting levels/infinite lives etc

There's also a Chinese version of the menu - I haven't transcribed the names but you can view a video of both languages' game lists here.

Console

this is quite ugly

TV out

This console does have TV out functionality, a relative rarity for this type of handheld. However it isn't activated until the main menu is displayed, so the intro and language select are never output. Also it doesn't mute the speaker (and using the "sound" button to mute/quieten the speaker audio affects the TV-out sound too), so you have to have audio playing through both the console and TV.

As mentioned above, the later 699 in 1 revision removes the TV out functionality. At a guess this is probably because the TV-out must be detected and activated in software, and the 699 in 1 game set doesn't support it.. Or maybe it's different internal hardware entirely, who knows.
